Hermès Collier de Chien, also known as CDC, has been an iconic accessory of many celebrities and fashionistas for years. From ELLE’s style director Kate Lanphear, designer Tory Burch, style icon Victoria Beckham to famous actresses, models and singers such as Katie Holmes, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga, all have been seen wearing this classic bracelet. Whether you own a CDC, it is timely to be au fait about this always ‘it’ arm candy.
The Collier de Chien literally translates to “dog collar”. The design originated from a leather dog collar that Hermes created for a client’s bulldog in 1923. Quickly the style spread as the chic Parisian women at that time liked to travel the city protected by packs of giant dogs. The collars became so popular to the point that fashion designers purchased them to wear as belts. Taking note of this excitement, Hermès introduced CDC belts in 1927.
Eventually, a line of Hermès CDC bracelet was launched in 1940. It has a turn lock closure that is adjustable, and four pyramids.
The hardware is available in palladium, gold (since 2010), diamond (since 2013) and rose gold (since 2015).
It comes in different materials like calfskin, suede, exotic and solid silver.
Here, we’ll help you to familiarise yourself with the non-exotic leathers of Hermès CDC, which are the same leathers commonly used in Hermès bags.
Box calf leather has an incredibly smooth finish that offers a glossy and sophisticated finish. It is also stiff and becomes as shiny as a mirror over a long period of time.
This is the matte version of Box Calf. The finish applied to this leather gives it an almost plastic appearance at times.
This high quality calf leather is undoubtedly one of the best. It has buttery smooth and matte exterior. It’s typically mixed in with white top stitch, which only adds to its great natural colour.
Vache is gorgeous powdery matte leather made from adult cowhide. It has a very soft texture that is elegant and sophisticated, and its rather heavy exterior is completely water resistant.
Swift leather is amazingly soft to touch and shimmering in the sunlight. It comes in many vibrant colours.
Veau Tadelakt and Box Calf leather share a lot of the same qualities and features, but the exterior of Veau Tadelakt is much softer than Box Calf. It is impeccably smooth, semi stiff and semi shiny.
Epsom leather is stamped leather, which simply means that the pattern pressed into the leather is not the actual grain. This compressed type of leather holds true to its shape and structure in all instances and is completely resilient to scratches.
Suede leather is made from the underside of the skin. Because suede does not include the tough exterior skin layer, suede is less durable but softer than full grain leather.
CDC is available in sizes for both men and women. The size Small for Men measures 2.75 inches in diameter and 3 inches for large, for Women, the Small size is 2.25 inches in diameter, and large is 2.5 inches.
