THE HISTORY OF A WEAPON MAKER
The house of fashion Fauré Le Page once made weapons and armour for an extremely prestigious clientele, the French royalty. Now, it deals in “a new kind of weapons of seduction,” said Augustin de Buffévent, former Vice President of Dior New York, and the man behind the resurrection and transformation of the brand.
Augustin de Buffévent quit Dior in 2009 when he saw an opportunity in making gun-themed luxury leather goods in a French arms supplier. He sees the transition from shotguns to shoulder bags and cartridge cases to clutches as an organic process – after all, handbags are a weapon of seduction. Accordingly, he changed the company motto to “Armé pour séduire” which translates as “armed to seduce”.
It has been more than three years since the first collection of Fauré Le Page leather goods were rolled out. The revived Fauré Le Page has become a renowned bag maker with an interesting history.
Louis Pigny, a master gunsmith, founded the company in 1717. At that time, Fauré Le Page produced weapons and armour for notable clients which includes Kings Louis XV, Louis XVI, Napoleon I and various other aristocrats. The level of craftsmanship was truly astounding.
The firearms manufacturer was lauded by the likes of authors Balzac, Dumas and Pushkin for its contribution to revolutionary forces in 1789 (the one that toppled Louis XVI) and 1830 (also known as the July Revolution that saw Charles X executed).
The weapons were always presented in luxurious and intricate sheaths, from which has developed an additional line of business — cartridge cases, gun holsters, beater’s pouches and haversacks in highly resistant and waterproof waxed canvas or leather.
As time had gone by, the need for handcrafted firearms had decreased. The house was passed from buyer to buyer, quietly offering, until 2009, a depleted catalog of leather hunting goods.
That was when Augustin De Buffévent came into the picture as the man who revived and transformed the company into a unique luxury fashion house.
THE REVIVAL AS A HOUSE OF FASHION
Nowadays, Fauré Le Page is making gun-shaped purses and cartridge cases look like handbags. The brand is retelling its story with a little playfulness. As explained by Mr. De Buffévent, he wanted to create “pieces that could take a cheeky, quirky look at its hunting past — reminiscent of the past but worn as fashion accessories.”
Looking for iconic items of the brand, you can’t miss the pochette gun coin pouch and the signature fish-scale pattern, known as the “Scale” motif, canvas.
The “Scale” is a motif found on Fauré Le Page guns. The motif is screen-printed onto the canvas, which is waterproofed by waxing and grained into an extremely durable material. Most bags are made in this kind of printed canvas. Even though it has a similar vibe to Goyard, don’t get confused.
The iconic ‘Scale’ motif adorns most of their collection of waterproof canvas. The bag designed in high-end abstractions of armour and whimsical symbols of defence, along with the durable canvas material, as Mr. de Buffévent explained, gives the patrons “a sense of empowerment.”
THE BOUTIQUE IN PARIS
There are three ways to buy from Fauré Le Page. There is a stand alone boutique on Rue Cambon, a store at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann in Paris, and a store at Hankyu Department Store – Umeda Main Store in Japan. The brand interprets its history playfully in the product design as well as in the display of items at the boutique.
STREET STYLE WITH FAURÉ LE PAGE
With its unique design and original history, Fauré Le Page has been chosen as a fashion statement for both fashionable men and ladies.
According to Pauline Thomas, “Fashion is a language of signs, symbols and iconography that communicates non-verbally, meanings about individuals and groups”. People carry things that represent their personalities and motivations. Fauré Le Page pieces will speak for people who can relate to the struggle, fighting spirit, power, triumph, or defence and empowerment.
If you are looking for a fashion accessory that can subtly speak up your secret rebellion by telling an amusing story, Fauré Le Page may be right for you.
